Top 10 Reasons My 30th Birthday Rocked

Well, the big day has arrived - I'm 30. After a week of mini freak-outs about my upcoming milestone, the day has turned out to be filled with joy and devoid of the anxiety I had been anticipating. Last  night my friends joined me for a celebration in honor of the end of my 20's, and today has been filled with more "grown up" fare. Since I'm enjoying making top 10 lists these days, I think I'll share my favorite moments of the birthday so far...

10. Freshly squeezed pineapple juice enjoyed seaside. I treated myself to one of my favorite Mumbai beverages today after relaxing at the spa, watching the waves hit the walkway to Haji Ali and enjoying the cool breeze. Mumbai may not have fireworks on/near my birthday like back home, but Worli Seaface comes close to making up for it...

9. Gifted spa treatments. My amazing friends here booked me a spa day at my favorite place in Mumbai and surprised me with it as a gift last night. I sipped green tea while enjoying a mani-pedi and Thai massage and enjoying stunning views of the Arabian Sea. How thoughtful are my friends for arranging this for me??

8. Friends convinced that I was turning 27 rather than 30. Two of my friends and future Booth classmates were asking me last night how it felt to be turning 27. I laughed, thinking it was a transparent ploy to give me the opportunity to lie about my age, and responded by saying that I'm happy to be so old because I'm that much wiser than I was 3 years ago. They kept talking as if I'm 27 for several minutes and I finally had to correct them. They acted surprised - which felt nice. I'm still not sure if they were pulling m leg from the outset, but either way it was a nice thing to say...

7. Shower beer. The whole idea of last night was that I would celebrate the end of my 20's by doing things that I'll be too old for in my 30's. Hanging out with Kevin and Ami before we headed out for the night, I told them I was going to shower and start getting ready. Kevin says "well about a beer for the shower?" My initial reaction is to laugh and say "no thanks," but Ami chimes in with a reminder that drinking a beer in the shower is something only young and irresponsible people do, so I said why. Ot? This made them laugh and comment that it would be easy to get me to do almost anything tonight with the argument that it's irresponsible (I thank them for not asking advantage of that)...

6. People actually bent to my will if I asked them to do something purely "because it's my birthday." Kevin even did a handstand on the dance floor. True story.

5. Dancing train. My friends started a "train" last night in the club - with me at the head of it - and we charged through the dance floor, around the bar and even up the stairs, with my friends all the while shouting "it's her birthday!" to anyone who would listen...

4. 30 kisses (well, actually 31). My friends took it upon themselves to find 30 different guys to come wish me a happy birthday with a hug and kiss on the cheek. Only one of them seemed to miss the memo about it being "on the cheek" and surprised the hell out of me by going in for a full smooch. Inappropriate? Probably. Hilarious? Definitely. It ended up being 31 guys in total since Joanne lost count and brought in an overly enthusiastic volunteer who kissed me before I could tell him he had missed the boat.

3. Frosting fight. Most friends will sing you happy birthday over your cake. Good friends are those  who think it's funny to smear frosting on your face as you're cutting the cake. GREAT friends will man up and take a cupcake full of frosting to the face in retribution. I have a great friend in Ami.

2. The most amazing birthday cake in the history of birthday cakes. It had Tiki reclining on a pink pillow, for crying out loud! My friends had sourced baby photos of me from my mom that they then had iced onto decorations for the cupcakes that surrounded the cake! The tag line: you may be 30, but you'll always be flirty. Oh, and it was delicious too. One friend commented to me that if anyone who knew me were to see that cake without any additional context, they would say "oh I didn't know it's Katie's birthday!" Now THAT is a personalized cake!

1. International love. (no, not like that - get your mind out of the gutter). I've already received birthday calls and well wishes from India (obvi), Singapore, Australia, Tanzania, Germany, the UK, and of course the states. Today has reminded me how wonderful a group of friends and family I have, and how you don't need to be in the same room, city, or even hemisphere to remind me that you care for me. Thank you to everyone for making this a special day and for being in my life every other day as well. The funniest call I've received so far was from my dad at 7 pm India time yesterday (the 5th). He calls and in an excited voice asks "hi - what time is it there??" "um, about 7 pm." I respond. "Shoot, I did the math wrong. I thought it was midnight there and wanted to be the first to wish you a happy birthday!" Well, Dado, you were the first, and I love you for it...not to mention for giving me a chuckle too :)

The best part is that my birthday still isn't over yet! Tonight I'm going to a play with friends then out for some dancing. Who knows what additions I'll have to this list come tomorrow morning when I board a flight to Nepal?
